About Murma-Enman-Caldwell-Pratt-Hummel-Etc
In memory of my father, Walter Adam Murma.
THE MURMA FAMILY
There is no information of record for a family genealogy in Lithuania as all
records kept in churches and government offices were burned by the Germans in
World War II. Therefore, the oral history is all we have. The following
information was gathered by Walter A. Murma (1918-1981) from family members in
the United States and by correspondence with the Lithuanian branch in Vilnius.
Letter from Adam to his son Walter, no date:
"The information I am giving you comes directly from my brother, Isadore: In
Lithuania, as it was in the South of the United States, there was slavery. In
those days the people in Lithuania were ruled by rich landowners and one rich
landowner went to Germany, or near Germany, and brought back a slave by the
name of Thomas Murma....Thomas worked for this rich landowner for some time (as
a gamekeeper or Kumeciai) after which he married and received a piece of land
as a gift after getting married. The name of this piece of land he received
was in the village of Vielian. He was allowed to work on his piece of land in
spare times, otherwise he still worked full time for the rich landowner.
Thomas had two sons, John and Joseph. John was my grandfather."
Oral History:
While serving the landowner, whose name is unknown, Thomas and his wife had two
sons: Jonas (John) and Juozas (Joseph). When the boys grew up the landowner
gave Thomas his choice of one of three parcels of land: One located in
Velionis, one in Nevaizios, and one in Tirakis. Thomas chose Velionys. When
Thomas and his family arrived in Velionys they found one family by the surname
of Balciunas, an another family by the surname of Rakstelis. After Thomas'
death the land was divided between John and Joseph.
(Notes: I have two letters from an Aleksandra Bauziene addressed to Dear Uncle
and Godmother (Adam and Elizabeth Murma). She states that she is a widow for 8
years (no date on letters) and has a son, Zigman, who is 14 years old. I cannot
identify these people.
Also a typed letter dated February 10, 1972, from John J Murma (9-12-1912 - d.
October 1981 - Social Security Death Records). I cannot identify who this
person was.)
THE ENMAN FAMILY
All information is from extensive work done by Mildred (Enman) DeNooy, Richard
Mark Enman and Norma (Milligan) Falconer. (See "The Enman Family" at
tribalpages.com) A note from Mildred in her genealogy states that the family
cemetery at Grandview is now called "Martin Enman Pioneer Cemetery".
THE CUMMINGS FAMILY: From Arlene Somers Gillian.
THE MacLEOD FAMILY: From William MacLeod, with information from Marjorie
Matthews Bemont and Cassie Gordon MacPhee.
THE CALDWELL FAMILY: From Susan Marie Caldwell.
THE PRATT FAMILY - THE JEWETT FAMILY
All this information was given to me by Sue Caldwell or Dorcas Pratt Caldwell,
and was prepared, apparently, by one of the children of Charles G. Pratt as
references are made as: "dad's second brother" (Thomas Franklin
Pratt) "mother's father" (John S. Jewett). This person obviously had access
not only to many living persons in 1962, when this hand typed document was
prepared, but also access to the family Bible or Bibles.
THE HUMMEL FAMILY
Historical information is from "A Genealogy of Selected Northumberland County,
Pennsylvania, Pioneer Families, from the Arrival of the Immigrant Ancestors to
the Present Time; Part XI, The Johan Jacob Hummel Family", compiled by Joseph A
Meiser, Jr., B.S., Ph.D., Sarah Roadarmel Meiser, and Dorothy Schuck Amerman.
Published by the authors 1983.
THE SCHUCK FAMILY: From Dorothy Amerman.
